my horse has had a lump on his side sort of just underneath and behind the saddle flap - has been there for a week and looked like a small fly bite to start with but has now spread. is this common? my instructor reckons its the bite spreading but its been there a while so i am worried - sorry about the crud pics - was a bit sunny at the yard this morning!!

think i will have to get better pics later - sorry!!!! its about 3inches wide by about 5 long and is quite hard.

Is it hot to the touch ? I had a bite like this myself (bee sting) which got infected, spread and was very hot and pulsating (!) before I went to the docs who gave me antibiotics. Looks like a bite to me. If it doesn't go down or spreads and gets hot I'd get the vet in.

Chi has had one for two weeks now on her neck.
More than likely a very very nasty horse fly bite, and yep then sort of get a bit bigger before vanishing!

I can't see it from the picture, but it sounds like a slight reaction to the fly bite.
You could try calamine lotion or other bite soothers...but I reckon it'll be gone in 7 - 10 days.
If there's any sign of infection though (and the horse will say it's painful, as well as an increase in swelling) you may need antibiotics from your vet.
