My daughters horse got kicked when out hacking 2 weeks ago,
The kick was about 4inches above the knee. Had the vet out as worried about infection etc treated with antibiotics. she recommended box rest for a week or then turn out for a couple of weeks before bring back into work.
The leg puffed up quite dramatically so after about 4 days I turned him out and the swelling reduced quickly.

However, he is left with a hard lump about an inch round that doesn't look like its going to go.

Has anyone any ideas how I can reduce this ? I'm really gutted as he is a striking horse and this is quite unsightly.

It sounds like the kick bruised the bone and the lump is a reaction by the periosteum - the 'skin' of the bone. It should go down in time. My friend's horse had a similar injury.

It can take 3-6 months for the bone swelling to resorb, cold hosing can help.

I am only surmising this is what the lump is. If you have concerns, contact your vet.

Thanks for the reply, yes that makes perfect sense. I'm being a bit paranoid about stuff like this at the moment . I not worried about the injury as such, as checked out and delt with immediatley and the horse has never been lame on it.

It will just be a awfull shame if left with a lump.

would cold wraps achive anything ?
