Ellie has a lump on her side, towards the back, below her ribs. It is hard and about the size of half a small marble, perhaps smaller. It doesn't bother her (I had a good prod and poke) and it is covered in hair and seemingly under the skin. It doesn't move.

She is absolutely fine, grumpy as ever, eating well, lovely shiny coat, fit and healthy in every other way.

She is 27, don't know if that makes a difference?

Any ideas?

My old horse had a similar type of lump and it was classed as "granulated tissue", probably the result of a nasty fly bite at some point.

If the lump your mare has is recent, it's possibly just a fly bite and might disappear in time.

mine has one thaat sounds similar to yours, except larger and different place- high up on his back leg. i think its a fly bite as i asked in NL as i thought it may be cancerous, but apparently it is most likely a fly bite...
