Grace is affected by feed quite easily and whenever you change a feed she comes up in bumps but they tend to go away in a few days time (usually around a week). When she came back from Leahurst following her colic surgery she had them quite badly and we thought that it was because she had been having Soft n Soak while she was there.

The bumps have gone off all of her body, but on her neck some of them have turned into some small scabs. I remember that when I took her on last October she had some scabs that were very similar and as soon as she was clipped they completely went. The vet seemed to think they were some sort of sweat lump or a reaction to something...

Has anyone had anything similar? And what did you do?

Clipping is not really an option because she is on box rest for a further 6 weeks...

a few horses on my yard had these and the YM assumed they where sweat lumps however it turned out the horses were recieving too much protein and they were in fact protein lumps.

edited to say - lovely to see grace back home

Thanks... Perhaps there was a high protein level in the feed she was getting at Leahurst because she was on a high energy feed???

She is only on Healthy Hoof and TopSpec now (soon to be on Alfa A as I am changing it gradually).

My old pony had them. vet said it was hay mites. My haynet was close to my door and everytime he looked out he rubbed his neck on his haynet. Moved his haynet to a corner and vola....... no lumps!!! They did go scabby for a while though then when his net got moved they healed and never came back.

She has a haybar so doesn't touch the haylage at all...

Hmmm, the vets at Leahurst didn't seem to think it was anything like that though... they seemed to think it was something she was eating, but then why would they scab a bit?

When I spoke to vet about J's bumps they said it wasnt usually a case of too much protien but a reaction to a certian protien. J's bumps go when I cut out all mollasses, he still has normal levels of protien from his other feeds but doesnt get the bumps.

My horse has them and in the cenrte of a lot of the bumps is a small scab, mostly on his neck area. I had the vet to take a look and really couldn't find any thing wrong with him mad pointed out that he more than likely has had a reaction to something eaten.

I am now thinking on the lines of Mad hector and think its down to mollasses as I gave him some and the bumps came up even more.
I need to re read Madhectors posts and find out what she is now feeding and try it, but I do need to give him a food for extra oomph when competing so not sure what there is around for that.

Hope you sort out graces bumps and I'm glad to hear she is now back home. All the best for 2008.

They are sending me some Alfa Beat to try...

I am wondering whether it is because of the feed she had at Leahurst... it was a high energy feed to get her eating and I am wondering whether the protein levels were just too much for her because she started with them on Christmas Day while she was still there.

I am going to try and feed her Alfa A, Alfa Beat and possiby some TopSpec Balancer too (the Leisure Time one)...

I do think they are something she has eaten... they were all over her body when I picked her up from the vets but now just a few remaining on her neck.

Mine has just come up with lumps all around his chest where his rug does up. They are like hard lumps under the skin with a tiny scab in the middle and some are oozing. His feed has remained the same and he is in the same field he has always been in so i really dont know what it is? does it go down or should I get the vet out?

My mare came up in lumps on her backside that were scabby, when the scabs came off all the hair came off with them. Started off as small pimply bumps and developed from that. I'm wondering if it's a reaction to Alfa A as it started not long after she started on afla a and I've heard of a few horses having skin reactions to alfa a so am going to be cuttng it out of her diet when this sack runs out. Since being on the alfa a (last Oct ish) she's been generally itchy and a bit grumpy about being rugged

Our horse came out in a rash in May last year. It was mainly on his neck and shoulders and looked a bit like fly bites. I did loads of research but didn't really come up with a solution. Suggestions I recived from knowledgeable people included too much protein, allergy to something eaten, (mollases?)

Anyway, one day the vet came to the yard to sedate another horse so I asked her. She couldn't decide what they were but suggested a steroid jab. This helped immensly. The lumps virtually disappeared overnight, However they did re-appear so he was put on a course or steroid tablets...90 a day gradually reducing to 20 a day over a period of weeks. (I should add that they were very small and designed for cats and dogs!).

By the time we finished the lumps had pretty much gone but the hair was slightly discloured where lumps had been.

We are now waiting to see if they re-appear in the next month or so.

Good luck

I have had a similar problem It seems to be an Irish horse problem so others tell me.

First show last year Feb time came home and over the next day or two developed a rash all over the area where the rug was. After no specific treament it went after 2/3 weeks.
Again this year first show March and lumps appeared I had the vet who gave a short acting steroid no change just a bill for £89
So went down the homeopathic route, I have had a good success before with splints.
The homeopath /Bowen therapist visited.
?? Over loaded lymphatic system
No itching and not off colour.
A Bowen session plus to start
Milk Thistle
Nettles
Chivers
Bach Flower remedies crab apple 4 drops in his water daily.

Guess what the spots are better in about 4 days,

We thought it might have been washing powder, too hot, stress travelling but I have faith with what the homeopath said!!
