I own a 3 yr old Quarter Horse mare and when she has had her injections for flu and tetenus where the needles went into her neck she now has a small hard lump (2 on near side and 1 on off side). The last injection she had she had in her chest but again she has got a small pea-sized lump. She did not have a reaction to the injections themselves in anyway. Her father was cremello and I am wondering whether the dilution of the genes may have made her sensitive? Any ideas? Thanks

My horse had a reaction to in between his chest after being injected. His was fine other than a lump appearing about half the size of your fist on the injection site. I asked the vet why this lump had appeared and he said that if the horse moves even just slightly when the needle goes in or out then it could of occured from this. It went down after a few days and he was fine ever since. Just thought you might be interested in my own experience. Hope your mare gets better soon. Emm.

I am worried about my old mare as she had her F&T jab about 3 weeks ago. on the morning she was fine then on the night when I went up to tuck her in for the night she was unable to get her neck down at all.

A few weeks on and she still cannot get her head fully to the floor - I have put a call in to the vet again and waiting for his call. She is an old lady so I thought if it were bruised or something it would take a little longer to settle - now I am very concerned.

Has anyone else experienced this a few weeks on with injections?

Its a possibility your Vet hit a nerve whilst administering the needle, also same effect if hitting the edge of the muscle! it can have a reaction as you describe and usually does get better over time but can take quite a few weeks to fully return to normal, gentle massage around the injection area daily with your nuckles can help. As for hard lumps after injections, some horses have adverse reaction from the vaccine which can cause a slight swelling in a 'pocket' which, if left to its own device usually turns into a hard lump, massageing with the thumb or nuckle on the needle area as soon as the needle is removed can help reduce the lump forming.
