My mare has recently obtained a few(3), quite solid lumps on her back. 2 are in identical places jus below her withers, so i'm inclined to believe it's her saddle? just wondering wot else it may be. will be calling the saddler tomorrow anyway but any suggestions?

id say it sounds like you saddle. They could also be sweat bumps aswell? is your horse clipped? if not when rding he could be getting hot under his saddle and getting sweat bumps, my gelding gets them, even tho he is fully clipped out. They are hard little lumps. However it does sound very much like yours is definately your saddle.

My cob has this type of lump on her back the vary in size from about a small pea to a 50 pence piece. You can push them squeeze them and prod them and the horse does not react. There is no pain asociated with them. It is probably a condition called collagen necrosis which is caused by dead cells collecting under the skin. A steriod cream called fuciderm can sometimes help. It wont do any harm to have your saddle checked and reflocked. These lumps can be caused by fly bites or old injuries and impact traumas. If the horse is not bothered by them i would not worry just keep an eye on them and make sure they do not bleed or get bigger.
