We have a horse who was put out in the field for a break and has developed a horrible rash like thing with lumps all over his body. The vet prescribed this Prenizalone (cant spell) tablets over 3 days, rash cleared, then within 2 days it was back again, another course and again cleared up - but now back again really bad- poor boy is miserable - do not know what to do - gave him other anti histimines and then a liver tonic but he is still awful - any suggestions or similar experiences. Other horse was out with him and he is fine - nothing odd in the field

hi there

where i work, we too have a horse that comes in from the field with lumps all over him, we check them(ensure no heat, cleanlieness etc) and simply leave them we tihnk they may be some sort of heat bumps, in few days they clear up.

it has happened once or twice on another horse too.

Thought of that but he is in such poor form when they appear, he can hardly drag himself form his stable and they are all over his body- when he had the drug from the vet they disappeared, we rode him and he was great now he is awful again

protein lumps? He could be eating too much protein, which could cause lumps

It seems like some sort of allergic reaction from something in tha field even if you can't see it. It may be a reaction to fly-bites. Just like us some are more susceptible than others and allergies can develop over time.
Mine recently came in with lumps all over his body and swollen undercarriage which didn't go for several days so got vet out and he gave him a steroid injection which cleared it up. We think it was a recation to fly-bites. He goes out with a fly-rug now which has helped. Have to watch steroids though because there is a risk they can cause laminitis. My vet said antihistamines such as Piriton were not very effective in horses - they dont know why but also you have to give about 30 (human tablets) to do any good at all. I would keep him away from field until his lumps have gone and simplfy any feed and then gradually add things back - half the time though you never really know what causes the reaction.

Vets probably gave Prednisolone (sp?) which are steroids and would have helped to calm an allergic reaction. As sbts says, go easy on the Preds as they can trigger a laminitis attack - I'd have expected your vet to alert you to that. Short spells of low doses are probably worth the risk if they resolve whatever the problem is. Why was this horse put out in a field for a break? Is he normally stabled 24/7? If he's not used to being a horse in a field he's probably had an allergic reaction to fly bites or something in the grazing. And why was he given a liver tonic??? Is there ragwort (or St Johns Wort) in the field?

it good be a allergy alergic reaction or like othe people have said protine bumps keep an eye on her give her a bath in aleo vera shampoo and you could feed some aloe vera juice that may help as well!x

I would be thinking along the lines of an allergic reaction too, hence the prednislone helped the lumps go down. But as Box_of_frogs said it can cause laminitis and gastric ulcers if they were on a high dose for a while.

Piritons can be used in horses, your vet will advise you on doses, in a horse as opposed to pony I think it is about four human tablets twice a day. But if you get them vis your vet they can get lots of tablts at a slightly better price. I think that it is a subject which is disputed about whether they work well or not.

As I have heard from different people, some people think they have worked really well on their horses and other think not so well,

But it is always worth a try and doesn't have bad side-effects such as the NSAIDS
