About 2 days ago my horse got what look like massive fly bites on his croup quite close to his tale and then on his left flank. They're lumps about the size of a 2p coin, and they ooze. At first they were a lump with an oozing head, now they've scabbed over and when I was wash them the scabs come off and take all the fur with it leaving raw skin. Any ideas to what they are/how to treat them? So far I've washed them and put aloe vera gel to help soothe them. They don't bother him at all, he's very happy for me to poke and prod them as much as I like!
He had the exact same thing last year around this time and all around his back legs. Then he wasn't rugged because the weather was good but now he is so don't think they're fly bites? He's also white if that helps so sensitive skin?
Sorry it's kinda lengthy, hope it makes sense :o

One of our mares came up with something similar- small lumps under the skin all on her flank on the right side. They caused her no pain or discomfort and although havent really oozed, they did go scabby and i could pick them off. My auntie- who is a vet- checked them quickly when she was over and said they were nothing to worry about, probably an alergic reaction to the nettles in our field. What my pony had may be completley different to yours and this could be totally irrelevant :o but it could be something as simple as that :)

2 Weeks on now and she still has them  They did go down after she had a bath, and are a lot less noticable now.

pines of rome, they do look like bites, thought they were last year too. Will be obsessively putting on fly spray from now on...
penny3, interesting as they sound a lot like what mine has. What does he do to get them with his rug on?! Mind you wouldn't put it past him to do something that odd ;) Last year they were there for the WHOLE summer, not good :(

Across the last 3 days my pony had an enormous bump appear on his sacky bits (if you get my drift) and it's taken 2 days to go down so assume that was a big fly bite and tonight he has 2 on one side of his rump not so big but definitely fly bites. And someone on our yard who hacked out today said they were swatting huge flies off the horses as the sun came out and I guess the flies are making the most of a break in the rain to get flying and get feeding!

She's out without most days - and it's since the rugs been off they appeared I think . Mind you if yours is anything like mine I wouldn't put anything past that pony to get them under her rug :D Been told if you strim the top of the nettles they're ok then, haven't got around to doing that with ours yet though :o If you do magically get them to disappear though please share how, I want them gone too :(
