My horse had a lump on his chin on the left side about 4 weeks ago. Had vet out and gave anti-inflammatories. The next day swelling had spread and he had a thick lip. His SML nodes was swollen and so were the glands in his neck. This then all cleared up. A couple of weeks later he than started to choke on his haylage when he came in from the field. He was eating oddly and it looked like his jaw or TMJ was giving him problems. He does have a history of problems with the TMJ but this is normally sorted out by osteopath. He choke 2 more times and was scoped. This showed nothing and everything was normal. The vet decided to see if pain related and thought is was the TMJ and that he wasn't chewing the haylage properly. He was fine with hard feed and grass! He then went on 4 Danalon a day for 4 days on the third day had a lesson and went very well and all seemed fine-next day choked ! He then went a week eating haylage with no choke and hasn't since. It was then decided maybe it was the mechanics of the jaw and osteopath came out yesterday to check but all fine. Whilst she was looking noticed ulcers in mouth and two on tongue. This morning checked mouth fine ulcers were looking much better. Half an hour later huge lump on right side of chin that has now spread and he has a nice thick lip. He is fine eating grass, haylage and hard feed! Denist has also checked teeth-all okay

On the yard we have had horses with hives suddenly appearing and two other horses have choked. All, including mine, have never choked before. One horse that had lumps also had a very flared nostril the other night as if he had a blockage. He keeps coming up with lumps that go away over night!!

Sorry so long!! Has anyone else had anything similar??? I am at a lost as to what this is?

It has been going on for four or five weeks now and he has had no other signs, coughing, nasal discharge or raised temperature. I have had the vet to him twice now so I think she would have investigated that route.

After recently going through a similar thing with my little mare I wonder if there is a plant / weed in the paddocks that could cause a reaction like that - or a spider nest or something? I dont know but only ask as like you I am stumped what caused it. My horse's swellings did abscess out and there was some heat in the jaw before hand so we half expected it to burst out. She had 4 x antibiotic courses to try keep swelling down to prevent the choking. We know now what was inside it but no idea what caused it. So frustrating. I have only recently moved her to this field and on wandering around didnt see anything that could have a reaction and none of the other mares have been affected.

I hope you manage to get some answers. Perhaps the vet could blood test to see if there are any bacteria in there. That is what we did to rule out certain things and to make sure the antibiotics we used were the right ones for the bacteria inside.

Good luck and I hope your horse gets better soon.

Allergic reaction to something in field or haylage.
A friend has a horse currently suffering from ANT bites!!
He is very poorly with swellings round muzzle and on lips. You would not think ants could have done so much damage .

I'm going through something similar with my mare at the moment. She started choking on haylage around 11 weeks ago and occassionally choked on hardfeed. So a couple weeks ago she got scoped and nothing was found. She hasnt choked since but all haylage etc is soaked before feeding. then she got a swelling in her glands and she was put on boxrest and swelling went down. once down she was returned to the field and swelling came back so she inside again.
I'm having the vet out tomorrow to run bloods and some tests and see if we can find anything. Sorry we have no idea what is causing it but it looks like its something in the field that she is reacting too.
