Just thought i would post my expriences with this problem as i see there have been o few more on this subject. One of my horses has three lumps under the saddle area, one of which is quite big i have tried every potion known to man kind and they are still their. If any one has a similar problem i would not worry about it, you can push them squeeze them bash them and get absolutely no reaction from the horse. I have been informed they are sweat bumps or collagen necrosis [dead cells]. If you are thinking of trying creams potions and lotions save your money. These bumps do not put the horse up or down they are more of a worry to the owner. The only advice i can give that is as good as anything is wash the back with hibiscrub after exercise if the horse has been sweating. I would be interested to here of any one else who has tried creams potions and lotions and if they had the same negative effect as mine did.

Only ever happened once after a long sponsered ride and was panicking that the saddle did not fit, so glad you posted this - not come back since and gone the next day.

My Horse got a bump develop with his old saddle that he came with. It has taken months wit the new saddle and hibiscrub but it is now almost gone thank god. I was initially worried about it but my vet and my saddler put my mind at ease.

Owen seems quite similar to your horse, as you say, you can poke and prod these bumps and he dosent even budge

I had a wow saddle fitter out at the weekend - my boy has couple of these lumps, they are considerably smaller than they were when he developed them about six months ago.
She said she had heard that it had been suggested it was something to do with migrating worm larvae afer using certain worming products? Frightened the life out of me. Has anyone else heard such a thing?

Had the vet yesterday for Georgies jabs. Got him to have a quick look at the lumps. Said it could be blocked sweat glands, granulation tissue, could be worm larve or a host of other things. Without doing a bioposy it would be difficult to tell. Seeing as they dont bother him we both agreed it was best left alone. So still none the wiser!

I had the same after I bought a new saddle, fitted properly by a really reputable saddler. Lots of small hard lumps under the saddle area, some close to the spine.

People told me it could be due to too much protein in the diet, sweat, or this worm thing.

Anyways, not convinced as I certainly don't feed too much protein, I'm diligent about washing off, and thinking that it's too much of a coincidence that they appear after I buy a new saddle, I got the saddler back.

He said he very much doubted it was the saddle, but he would take it away for a 'minor adjustment' anyway. Hhhhmn, yeah right. His parting words were, 'well, I'm sorry about that...erm, if it is the saddle, of course, which it definitely isn't...'

Saddle came back a few days later, and miraculously within a week or so the lumps went, and all I'm left with is a small patch of white hairs - evidence that the saddler xxcked up the fitting in the first place.

So, I would say it is most likely to be an ill-fitting saddle. And even if your saddler says the saddle fits, and it can't possibly be that, they may not be telling the truth.

I have read this thread with great interest... as my boy developed a lump on the saddle area as well, i could prod and poke it and it didnt bother him. I have been using the saddle on him for over a year when the lump appeared. I have now got a new saddle (3 wks ago) the lump has never got any bigger, but may have got smaller although i think now he has his summer coat that has made it look smaller. So fingers crossed it will go. I also found the worm thing very scary.
