Yesterday I noticed my horse had a few medium sized lumps on his back under where the saddle goes, they weren't hot and were slightly squishy so I lunged him rather than ride. This morning they had gone down so I rode him but now they are back again. He has recently got a new saddle (a few weeks ago), and though it fitted perfectly at the time it now sits so that it slightly hovers above his back under the cantle/seat region, so presumbly when i ride it bangs down a bit which I guess must have caused the bumps. I am quite annoyed about this, horse does not seem to be in any pain yet but I am reluctant to ride again for fear of making it worse. Do you think it is the saddle and if so should I change saddle or stick a thick numnah undeneath or a rear riser pad? Any suggestions welcome

The lumps are probably sweat bumps, and are quite common. You are quite right in that the saddle should not hover above the back and it will casue pain to the horse when being ridden. It is usual for a saddle fitter to come and check a new saddle after four weeks, so I would suggest you get him/her back to check it for you.

Lydia (user on here) her pony gets what sounds like very simular problems. Vets tried a few different things, found the only thing that made them go away was bathing them in salt water (how simple!)

Of course make sure you have saddle fitted as well
