Lumpy after clipping?

My friend's horse comes up in lumps round his girth after he has been clipped. They come up after he is ridden and go down within a day or so and after a couple of weeks he is fine. This means he can only be ridden every other day for a couple of weeks.

This year she:
Washed the girth area with warm water after he had been clipped
Wiped off the girth area after he had been ridden (and obviously groomed before being ridden)
Covered the girth with a plush sheepskin cover

Any bright ideas to prevent? She is thinking of leaving the girth area unclipped next year

The cover is washed in the non-bio detergent she uses on everything and if it was what the girth was cleaned with I would expect him to go lumpy when he isn't wearing the girth cover in the summer when his coat is very fine. The girth is washed off with water.
Good thinking though! He is allergic to the spray to stop mud sticking (cant remember what its called) and some fly spays. Could it be clipper oil as however thoroughly you wash you probably leave a little residual oil?

my old pony had a similar problem a shavers rash but he got it on his neck. my yard owner used to tell me to get a cloth put it warm water with baby shampoo and wringe it before placing over the area gently rubbing. It used to work on him but it might not for another as they are all individual. It's basically an allergic reaction, one of our other ponies occasionally comes out in rashbut since we have used the pre clipping shampoo before clipping we've never had the rash appear since

If it is just the girth area that this happens too try clipping it first whilst the blades are cold and using baby oil instead of clipper oil. It's not ideal and you can go back to clipper oil once youve done the dodgy bit.

does your friend use anything in the warm water? if the horse is sensitive to the clipping oil and the heat or sweat under the girth compounds this then they'll need something in the warm water to cut through the grease to remove all residue from the skin

Try a different oil maybe? We sell one at clippersharp with lavender oil in and a bactericide it which a lot of people have said it helped their horses who came out in a rash from using other oils.

It could be the clipper oil one of my horses is allergic to baby oil but is fine with the clipper oil, it could be that the skin is very sensitive after the clip and the girth with it being tight irritates it, what sort of girth is it?

Trying a different clipper oi; is definitely worth a go. The girth is covered in sheepskin.
There is nothing in the warm water so again adding something to remove the oil is worth a try
Thanks guys!

You could try clipping that area first and don't put oil on the blades I know it's not ideal for the blades but it's such a small area it should be ok, or you could use the trimmers that don't require oil they might not clip as close but you won't really see it.

Mine had an allergic reaction to coat gloss I accidently got in the girth area the girth then slipped back and fore instead of staying in position caused HUGE swellings either side, so it wasn't the actual coat gloss it was what it made the girth do. It took ages for it to heal and when it did whenever I rode little lumps used to come up and take days to go so I got lambswool girth sleeve long length so it covered all the girth so none of the girth touched the skin and it worked and I never ever got coat gloss in that area ever again :-(

I put aloe vera on it but that made it explode into the massive raised patches either side as it healed the hair fell out as it had gone into little lumps, hair came back eventually

My girl is allergic to clipper oil particularly on her stomach/mid section. I avoid getting these lumps by clipping her who mid section on both sides first without using any clipper oil. I can then use clipper oil to do her quarters and her head/neck/legs as she does not come out in bumps on those areas. She is always bathed with cold water after as the heat from the blades can irritate her skin. Could try a bit of talc around the girth area as it will absorb any excess sweat which could irritate the skin after being clipped (my vet recommended this).

Even if you wash the clipper oil off after with shampoo or something you could still get some bumps, because some allergies are pretty much instant on contact, so if it takes eg half hour to clip the horse then the irritant has been on the skin for half hour, and washing it off afterwards doesn't change that fact. If at all possible, the best thing would be to work out which particular ingredient(s) the horse is allergic to and avoid products containing those.
