Horse came in a few day ago with a couple of bumps, thought they were fly bites and said horse is prone to being bitten and lives in a boett rug to help stop this.

2 days later and horse is covered in lumps, more on belly and tops of hind legs, but some on back and neck etc...

Has always been prone to bites, hence the fly rug, but now not sure they were bites. Maybe something from the start was causing a problem but now it has gone into over drive????

Horse is in at night on shavings and good dry hay, out in the day on good grass. Lives in boett rug. Gets a handful of pony nuts and some hifi for tea and thats it!

Please, please please need some ideas, on what to do and what might be the cause?

Thought might get my vet to come and give her a anti histamine jab if it could be an allergic reaction to something, but that doesnt help me find out what it is...

Ideas?!

Sorry no ideas, but, Mine had lumps in same areas a few months ago, took to vets and had a steroid injection and given some spray if they return, nothing has as yet, never found out what caused it. Mine also lives in fly rug.

sorry not very helpful!

Either
- the pony nuts
- the hi-fi
- the grass
- the boett rug
- something the boett rug's been washed in
- fly repellant
- something else I can't think of, but you're right it's an allergic reaction.

My four year old has suffered with this all summer. We think she had a virus at the end of winter as she seemed a bit lethargic and her coat wasn't as good as it could be and she was running up a bit light. Around easter time we noticed a few lumps across her back and within a few days she looked like this:

Not sure whether you can see from this photo but she was peppered in lots of tiny hard lumps across the trunk of her body with a few on her hindquarters but nothing on her neck. They were also predominantly on her near side too. The vet gave her a steroid jab and prescribed anti histamines (Phenergan). I was told not to ride her though as a) the anti histamines make them drowsy and b) my vet was concerned about her wearing tack over the bumps and causing lasting scars. Since then we have bought 2 Snuggy hoods spik and span rugs and have taken her off the anti histamines and replaced them with a new (herbal) drug, prescribed by our vet called 'Cavalesse'. She has been on it for just over a month now and the lumps around her saddle area have alsmot gone. She still has a few over her flanks etc but im hoping they will diminish in time too. Its been a pain as i wanted to do more with her this year but both my vet and i are hopeful that it won't reoccur next year. I hope your youngster goes on ok with them. It really is a nightmare when they have sensitive skin and react to everything!

I too wonder about the bedding she is on and whether she is being affected by a particular mite that may inhabit this. My mare is bedded down on Bedmax at the moment but i'm looking into other possibilities to see whether any further improvement in her skin can be made.

my horse gets something like this, I have never been able to pin point what it is. He gets it around April/May time, so I put it down to something growing then. I usually move him to a different field and it goes away. My vet is reluctant to do anything about it as steroid injections can cause laminitis, so I might end up with more problems.
The lumps come up really quickly, I can see them growing, and it usually happens about 30 minutes after bring him in from the field and is speeded up by exercise. I know this as the first time it happened this year I was lunging him and I could see them coming up. It took a couple of days to go down once move to another field and the fluid collects under his stomach and between this front legs, its very odd.
As it could be so many things its difficult to work out what it is, the only thing you can do is change one thing at a time and see it things improve

My cremello used to get this after clipping but now gets it all year round and I have never got to the bottom of it!! It doesn't appear to bother her and usually goes down after a few days - looks nastier than I think it actually is. She can get them really badly all over her body including her face and the lumps can sometimes be huge but she still doesn't seem to mind them!

My horse is really suffering this year too and is now out at night in a full fly rug and neck and face. On the odd night I have put him out without the fly rug on but a rainsheet he gets bad again. It seems even thought the bites are then on his neck (the rainsheet has no neck cover, his back still comes up. He now goes out in the full fly sheet whatever the weather and this seems to be helping, although he obviously getting very wet, but this does not seem to bother him!
