my lad has come out in a lumps on his neck, chest and quarters. the ones on the neck and chest are about pea size but when you touch then there is nothing under the skin feels completely smooth. the ones on his quarters are hard and they are on a large soft fluid filled lump. it goes without say that i will call the vet in the morning even if they have go to see what may have caused it.

nothing has changed in his feed, bedding or rugs. he is fully clipped but not been clipped since november. fully rugged up including neck. no new plants in the field and he can't get to any bushes.

any ideas what may have caused this? he has been under the weather about a month ago with a kidney infection. not sure if this would effect this.

please no rude comments, my lad i well cared for and if i felt his condition dictated he needed immediate veterinary attention he would get it without a second blink. however he is happy in himself eating, drinking, peeing and pooing

It may be with the grass coming through that an unchanged feed regime may mean that too much is being given - I have certainly seen lumps like this in the past as a reaction to too much barley, for example.

had this exact same panic attack when my tb came off the box covered in a rash exactly like you have described... turned out to be heat rash (or something to that effect) but has also come out in lumps and bumps after a change in hay/ new growth in the field.. the vet said it was hyper sensitivity and would just go away as he adjusts to the new feed/plant in the field.. when asked if i could treat it (incase it flared up at show like the heat rash had) he said antihistamines but they can do alot of damage to the liver.. so i just wash him with a natural wash (Botanica) which seems to sooth it and its gone in a couple of hours or by the next day :)

not sure if its the same but just thought i'd share in case that helps! :) hope hes ok! :)

arr when i say unchanged i didn't mean quantities i have halved his feed a couple of weeks ago as he is a bit porky.

vet came today gave him a steroid injection, basically it is some kind of allergic reaction. so if it comes back in a few days i need to start cutting out anything that ha changed in the last 4 weeks. fingers crossed this first jab works!
