Lunge pens questions

Hi there, those of you who have built lunge pens, what diameter did you use and what would be the smallest diameter you'd find useful?

How did you fence it (if at all)?

What surface did you put down?

How was getting planning permission?

Have a small forest which I have been coppicing thus made posts very eco friendly :) then used electric tape around it. 20m across

Surface is just grass, but will be putting a layer of sand on top of the grass nothing to fancy.

No planning needed after all its not a structure as such !

Basic but functional easy to make and cheap !

You can see its basic but serves its purpose

I bought mine as it was on sale. 5' gate type panels, completely mobile. Very useful in so many ways. Very rarely used for lunging;) It is 60' and on grass, used mainly for working and starting babies. Oh and catching bad mares that don't want to be caught;) :D
 
I wouldn't want anything smaller than 60'. No planning problems here, I can put a barn up as long as I say it is for livestock, no-one blinks an eye. If planning is a concern then the panel ones may be the way to go.
 
im not sure how big mine is TBH, but it is post and rail with the two rails higher than normal and closer together, then below it is small square stock fence, the smaller squares are too small for a hoof etc to go through, and the higher rails = no horses jumping out! I painted the post and rails white, so it looks rather smart... which is good going for me! in the Autumn I have about 2 tonne of wood chipping dropped in it from one of the local tree and hedge chopping companies, and I pay them in a few beers!

The reason I asked about planning was my understanding was once a fenced off area was permanently changed from equestrian, or agricultural land (ie you can't graze it again) you need planning.

Obviously this doesn't apply for a grass lunge pen.

I should think if it was questioned you could get away with calling it an isolation/sick pen. Depends how much of a Jobsworth you have (if you have to) deal with.
 
The natural wood chip I use becomes rather peaty over a few years, so you can plant grass etc in years to come and in my mind hasnt removed the ground long term from being either grazing or agricultural land
 
Thanks, though I'm not sure it matters what I personally think about it. Round here we can't afford not to do things by the book as we have helpful neighbours who'd just LOVE to report us for so much as farting wrong ;)

I am now wondering whether it's feasible to make a lunge pen of grass and irrigate it to keep it useable in high summer.
