Hi all,

I have recently took a mare out on loan she does lots of hacking and she has tried her hoof at hunting to, however she hasnt done a lot of schooling work. im slowly briningg her back into establishing some control and get her listening and responding to me, she is getting better every week! But when it comes to getting a coontrolled canter it just dosent happen. It has been suggest to try some lunging with her. Do you think this will help? i have never lunged before only helped so please feel free to tell me as much as you know!:D i will get an experianced person to lunge her 1st and then i slowly start it as i need to learn first.

Any help appreciated
Thanks

your experienced person will teach you to lunge, its easier to learn and see! For the ridden work, get her listening to your aids! do lots of circle work (the aids for a circle and canter are the same!), do some lateral work, do some hill work... when she is nice and balanced in walk and trot try a gentle canter up a hill at first, just a short one then bring her back! this should help x

eta - thers another thread on lunging .. have a look! someone has posted a video that might help x

Thanks for relpies. I have establised basic aids walking trotting circles halt /half halts ect and have got her listening which is good! im just now moving on to canter (as i feel we are both ready!), have done bit of hill work and canter up "the straight" in woods to get a controlled balnced canter and this works nicley, now moving on to the schooling side which is were i belive lungeing will help. I will hav a look at the other threads thanks:)
