Lunging a monster...

Lunge with two lines. The outside line will keep him out and hoefully stop him swinging his backside in at you.
TBH though I would hope no horse had to "respect" a whip....

is it a monster, or does it maybe not know how to be lunged? start with a very small tight circle walking around you and when that is going well then go bigger, whips are only there to keep the balance and rhythm.

I found it easier to "explain" to the pony what lunging was supposed to be about using side reins. they seemed to give enough contact to keep her out on the circle. Now I'd use an assistant leading on the outside of the pony so it's attention was on me in the middle.
Remember it doesn't have to be perfect at the beginning (so long as you stay alive), another pony I taught to lunge spent the first month motor biking round cutting in, and didn't understand Woah - but we got there in the end.

Perhaps work on other ground work first, leading, moving him etc if you think respect is an issue.

Then when you go back to try lunging work on walk first, with a helper walking by his head, until he understands what is expected.

Gain its respect with groundwork & everyday handling before complicating it with trying to lunge. Then I'd start from scratch with the lunging, & basically do exactly the same as I would with a youngster who's never lunged.

Lots of groundwork first. A fell at our yard had no respect for his owners and basically walked all over them when lunging, he just barged into them and tried to bite their legs! He isn't fazed by anything and is a strong little bugger. Tried free lunging first and he kicked off to start with but after a week got the idea that he was supposed to work away from you around the arena while we taught voice commands. I clipped the lunge line on him yesterday and he moved on a perfect circle, tried running in a few times but got him straight out again. No one could believe it was the same horse lol! It just needs more understanding and respect for you, it needs putting in its place.

Start from scratch and go back to basics! Also have you tried free schooling? I can free school my 4yo without any issues , oh and whip is never used , I rely solely on voice commands.
