I have a pony straight off the moors and I am starting lunging. Hes excellent on the left rein now after 6 sessions but as soon as we go to change to the right rein and I go to send him out he just takes off.

I can get him back to a trot & walk but if we go to a stand and walk he takes off again. It’s almost like he’s unsure of me been on the right rein and we can’t master the start.

Worried if I don’t tackle this now it will cause long reining & backing issues.

Help on how to solve this problem would be great.

Do you ever lead him from that side? Just getting him uses to walking round the arena with you on the wrong side might calm him down a little. Most horses have a 'better' rein for one reason or another.

Hi, it’s fairly normal for most horses to be reluctant to let the handler in one eye. More often the right eye.
I have 2 x3 year olds doing groundwork now and both are worse to lunge on the right.
Watch Steve Young horsemanship on YouTube, you will see how common this is.
Just lots of right rein quiet walk, halt, exercises, disengaging the quarters and leading from the right little and often and it will get better x
