When lunging our 5yo I use the lunging whip only to point to shoulder to keep him out on the circle but never use it on him although have flicked it behind him (not to make a cracking noise) to reinforce command for upward transition. I accidently TOUCHED his backside today and he kicked out - ids this acceptable behaviour? Also whilst in trot much later he lowered his head and came in slightly in a threatening way, I growled at him and pointed whip at him and he moved back out onto circle. Any advice on how to improve my technique? Much appreciated

Ask an experienced person or instructor to help you. My instructor will do this if needed so may help to get a professional involved so you know you are on the right track.

I always de-sensitise them so speak with the lunge whip, I don't have it there to use on the horse but just as an arm extension like it's meant to be used. I usually before and after each session usually always rub the whip over them, especially on their backside just as a quick thing out of habit really!
