Lunging and the older horse

Normally I'm a big fan of lunging for fitness and balance and have done it at least once a week often twice. However the horse I now have on loan is 17 though you wouldn't think it as he is in great conditon, he is also pretty well balanced already do you think he would still benefit from being lunged or would it be too much strain on his joints?
He is getting schooled at least twice a week, hacked out a couple of times and we are about to start some jumping.
 
My 19 year old lunges up to 3x a week, depending on my shifts - If I end up on long days, my Dad lunges her or loose schools her in the roundpen
