At my last yard we had a great school, and after many attempts to get the lad lunging safely (I kid you not  ), I have really missed doing it with him over the last 6 months (moved to yard with no school).

So today I decided the time was right, found a corner in a spare field, and after a few bucks, off he went. He remembered his manners, and did it all off voice. I am so chuffed, as it means I can get him really fit again, without having to do fast hacks - I have a dodgy back.

Another one with a bad back, if I'm having a particularly pain filled day I will lunge just to save him from being affected by me. I love watching how loose and supple he is and how beautifully he moves (although this mornings peaceful lunging/pony adoration session was rudely interrupted when my sisters horse cam flying past the arena, fully tacked up and proceeded to gallop around having a wonderful time not letting anyone near him having made his escape! My pony went from lovely long and low trotting to head up tail up snorting and boinging!)

I lunge in the Pessoa every second day.....long and low, to try and build his back and topline, after his diagnosis of KS in jan - I also love to see his movement and knowing that I am helping him getting fitter.....next step is to get him lunging over poles to help him lift back feet and engage his hind end a bit more.....hard work these horses aren't they? Lol. But so worth it!

It is really good fun once you get that "understanding" isn't it ! I have to tie my lad's forelock back so I can keep an eye on his eyes, and work out his next moves. I think we both see it as a game now.

Funnily enough, Tuesday is my bleeeuurggh day and therefore my lunging day, I purchased a pessoa in December and use it weekly prior to that lunged in headcollar...not sure whether I love/hate the pessoa but use it long and low, horse hasn't yet grasped the 'stretching' idea yet. But it is nice to see them move, but my connie can have some attitude on the lunge, ears go flat back and tail swishes at the words 'trot on' but canter isn't a problem, crazy pony.
