Lunging help please?

Depends what you are doing to ask for the extended trot.

I would agree with the above and say poles - if you put them in a sun ray type arrangement (radial from the centre), then you can lengthen and shorten the horse depending on how far away from the centre he is. For example, they are going to be closer together nearer the centre of the circle, and further apart further away.

I can get my horses to lengthen and shorten by using my voice but this took some training over poles first. I use "on" to lengthen, and "steady" to shorten, but making sure that the energy and rhythm is maintained.

To stop them falling back into walk I raise the lunge whip and flick it from side to side in the air. Seems to work, and none of them have ever flinched at it, but keeps them bouncing really nicely!

Hope this makes sense lol, really have your horse listening to your voice so that you can almost bring him back to walk then use the whip up to the hock to send him forward again, (bit like a half halt) When you can do this assuming you have a school and not a lunge ring use the half halt to engage his hocks as you come round the corner then walk/jog down the length of the arena. If he breaks back onto circle back to trot balance the trot he should soon get the idea. Poles also a great idea.

I think you mean when riding here?? Sorry he's only 32", i dont ride :) but thanks anyway!! Sorry if this isnt what you meant?

Ive tried the poles, he's fine over them but after he's been over them he just breaks into canter :( Maybe i should open the distance between them to lengthen his stride, ive never thought of that, thanks :)
