Now that I actually own my boy I want to take him right back to basics and almost start again.
Lunging is his worst bad habit!
He will be going round quite nicely and all of a sudden turn in to face me and either turn onto the other rein or just point blankly refuse to move.
I really want to be able to use lunging as a good tool for helping me build his muscle back up.

Welcome to my world.... After getting angry and frustrated for some time I have found that the following makes the difference with my mare...

A Pessoa
No lunge whip
A good deal of time getting her to just move off, away from me and then stop and praise after a few circles, repeat....
Slowly slowly.

I was putting too much pressure on her, getting upset and frustrated and she was getting angry. Now I see that she was actually quiet anxious about lunging. Change of approach seems to be working. For now.

I'd suggest side reins, and make sre that you in the 'triangle of control'. in other words make sure that you are standing in an equal triangle of horse, lunge rein, yourself and lunge whip. Don't let yourself drift and ensure that the whip is actually behind your horse!
