My cob quite happily lunges on the left rein, no need for whip or anything, he just goes round. But he is awful on the right! I'm lucky if I can get him to go round in one circle before he swings his bottom out and then starts backing up when I walk towards him to put him on the circle again. I try to keep behind his bum to stop him doing it, but he just does it anyway.

Any ideas how I can get him lunging well on the right rein too? I know this is probably because he's not sure what to do, but how do I get him to learn? I've been leading him a lot from the right to get him used to turning that way and happy with me being on his right side, but doesn't seem to make a difference when I come to lunge him.

Maybe ask a friend to go on his outside when lunging and lead him on the cirlce around you in walk and trot. Hopefully it will then click in his brain that he should cirlce around you. As he gets the idea your friend can let go and slowly move away. He/she will need to be fit so they can run with him in a trot.

Ah didn't think about doing that! Boyfriend is always complaining he needs to exercise a bit more...

Do you mean using the outside line to keep his bum in and on the circle, so bring it around his hind quarters?

Yes! Like long reining on a circle...

I agree, the two lines can be good. If u haven't done it before you should ask someone to show you the ropes (pardon the pun

). With two lines and a lunge whip I'm all thumbs. Or maybe its just me cos I'm a bit uncoordinated!

Lol good idea, think someone at my yard should be able to show me the ropes hehe. Yeah, I felt very uncoordinated when I first started lunging, was not use to the whip/lunge line combo!
