I am currently not riding as I have damaged my back but am hoping that I might be strong enough in the next few weeks to lunge my horse as his stomach is ever increasing with the lack of work!
What are peoples thoughts on lunging in walk and trot for short periods in my field, given that it is rock hard at the moment? Is it a bad idea or is that what you all do anyway?

I've been lungeing my TB in our field to keep her weight down. She copes fine - just don't over-do it. Its going to rain this week anyway so the ground might soften up a bit

Would wait until the ground softens a little though especially if your horse is liable to get excited and throw themselves about. Also doing it in a corner or sectioning an area off can give more of an enclosed feeling and help with control if your horse is likely to get excited, and lungeing off the bridle rather than a cavesson. Rain is imminent so will prob be perfect in a few days. Good luck
