One of my horses goes very well on the lunge using the draw rein method over his back. The problem is, he puts his head so low sometimes that it worries me he is going to step on the line, panic and hurt himself.

What can I do to stop the lines from coming so near his feet?

And let him run around and not work through his back properly, no thanks.

I know lots of people use this method so there must be someone who has come up with a solution

I worry about this too although my horse has never stood on them, I think people on here have said about putting a neck strap on with the draw reins through it to stop them getting so low :)

try threading them through a girth sleeve between the forelegs that usually fixes it.

I put a stirrup leather round his neck and thread the reins through that. Helps that mine had a long mane as I do a running plait in that then thread the leather through it to stop it moving.

Please could you explain, kindly someone, how exactly is this done? Lunge cavesson? Lunge line on which ring? Bridle? Lunge line/draw rein/s goes from where through front legs? Presumably some attachment on lunge surcingle. In what way, apart from cost, probably, is this better than using a Pessoa? I await with interest the whats, and whys . . .

Burmilla if you you tube draw reins lunge method. It will come up. You don't attach to roller but place over the back thread through either side bit ring and down to girth between legs.
I was using this and its good for getting neck stretch but my tb took it as great excuse to not use his bum.
I now use an equi ami to get the bum engaged. Instead you could do draw reins at front and then a tail bandage tied off the roller round the bum to opposite side.

This method is always my start point with weak horses it does not force them into a shape they are not developed enough to be in .
I like to use lots of poles , single ones dotted around the school and trotting poles.
The only word of warning is it can put some on their forehands hence the use of poles.
