Hello!
Someone told me today that i should not lunge my pony over jumps because the angle is wrong and the way they land. I only lunge my pony over jumps like one a week and they are usualy about 2ft high, am i wrong to do it?
Thankyou.

depends on the diameter of the lunge circle. would never lunge jump them on a 15m circle, but wouldn't worry about it on a 25m circle. personally don't see a lot of point lunging over jumps, i only lunge to excerisise mine when i don't have time to ride. have you tried loose jumping? loads of fun!

Some people don't like to lunge over jumps. I see no problem with it, but I do it on a large circle and using a headcollar, again something some people don't like. I find it extremely helpful though...its each to their own.

Have never lunged over jumps. I tend to freeschool. Never given it much thought about angle etc, but now you mention it......possibly, always on the turn and all that.....????????????

I guess it depends how you put them into it. Most of them are smart enough to sort themselves out and land safely. I would rather free school than lunge over jumps, but I can't because mine has taken a liking to jumping the arena fence as well.

I only even lunge over little jumps. If I want to put them over something bigger I always free school. I wouldn't want to put any of mine off by making a mistake!

I lunge both mine over poles but I make sure the circle it large and I don't pull them round too hard if they want to keep going forwards.

I've lunged Morris over jumps once or twice, but prefer to loose jump - less work for me!
I'd imagine jumping on the lunge could be bad for their legs and joints, just cos they're landing on an angle and everything. Maybe not though. Again, I always lunge on a large circle for balance.

All the times that I have lunged over jumps I find the best thing that works is running alongside so that they come in straight, and land straight and then you stop and they will turn around you...of course only over blocks as I always worry about lunge line on wings. Found it helps with her figuring out her own balance. Never tried loose - always worry she will jump out of the end of the school!
