Hey guys i was wondering if you could help me out.

i was recently waching the other girls down the yard lunge and it seemed odd they had a roller a caverson and then had the side reins attached to the roller and then to the side of the caversson.. iv never ever ever seeen this and it looked so odd is this right ? i was going to say something but decided to find out if its actually a way of lunging as iv never been taught that ..ever :P and i dont want to shout the oddds and find out its ok hahaa

and if it isnt correct what damage are they doing to the horses

many thanks xx

ps i lunge with side reins onto the bit but im so worried by using them its normally just in the bridles and a lunge rope :) x

It's not hideously incorrect... There's not a huge amount of point in doing it, it's not really teaching the horse anything. I doubt it would do any harm, although I wouldn't like the horse to be working round like this, but the side reins there just to keep the horse moving straight.

I would have always lunged as you do, but haven been away from horses for a few years, bought a few booklets to refresh myself, and they all reccommended to do what the other girls are doing in your yard, although, when long reining, they reccomend tthat you do it off the cavesson first and then progress to the bit. I actually have the booklet in question in my lap, Its written by Paul Fielder.
I am getting into natural horsemanship, went to see monty roberts last year, totally amazing!! If you go onto his website, there is a video of him lungeing, and it makes total sense. He has an aerial camera to show you from above what he's talking about, in relation to the horse been unbalanced/balanced. It's worth a watch, even if you are not a fan!!

Hope it helps!!

Thank you :)
i was just curiouse haha
i will have a look im not a hugee fan of parelli or monty roberts due to my one of my horses having a bad responce to it.he was a rescue and thought i would take the natural approch but he hated it (maby its just him being strange haha)
x

Old habits die hard, in my book anyway, and while i think what Monty Roberts stands for is fantastic, it's a little different putting it into practice, but that video is of benefit to everyone!!! I could do with him moving in with me for about 6 mths to show me how it works, free of charge, of course!!!!!

oo yes if its free of charge the other little beast could do with some lessons haha
and yeh old habits sure do iv been lunging this way for 10years if im honest i hardly lunge them though might look at getting a pessoa though i hear such good things :) x
