when i lunge linx in side reins he 'accepts' the contact in walk but in trot he has a high head carriage (most but not all the time) is there an aid that would encourage his head down. this also happens when ridden so something that can be used then would be great. Unfortunately cant get pics of him lunging as he's lost a shoe!

**i know that some people dislike 'aids' however im not looking for a quick fix but a tool that will encourage a lower head carriage in a more forward pace**

I am not good at this sort of thing but we use an elastic bungee. I goes over the head through the bit rigs and attaches to the saddle/roller.
We sent a horse for schooling and one was used.
My daughter has just passed all training and does ours now and this is the only aid we use. As it is so elastic and the tension can be altered we find it kind but works well.
We have a pony with a very high head carriage - star gazer - and it has worked wonders. They walk, trot, canter in it. We do not use it for jumping.
Don't know if of help.

I second th bungee, it also costs less then £10. You can also attach it to the grith between the front legs.

Another would be a chambon, however if you want to ride in it as well, go for a de-gogue.

It may however be caused by poor balance, try riding her on a completly loose rein, carrying out transitions between walk and trot, and focus on her moving forward without you balancing her, this improved me unbalanced star gazer alot.

Hi, i have this prob from time to time with my 5yr mare!
i know in a young horse its all to do with balance, and they find it so much harder in trot to work in an outline but i found lunging in a possosa works wonders and i find it easier when i ride her too. having had lessons, a persistant contact holding hands low & wide also does the job! Dont give up as my instructor always say's "no pain no gain" - have a browse on ebay my friend picked me one up for £20 in total brand new too!

I lunge in a chambon as advised by the vet to help build up her topline and improve her self carriage. It's really working well

I use a Harbridge works very well but does not force the head in any way at all (unless you fasten it too tight). Encourages a long and low carridge and you can ride and lunge in it.
