Just wanted to pass this on. Casper, my lovely rescue lurcher, didn't seem to be able to make it through the night from 11.30pm to 7am without flooding the kitchen, and pooing most nights too. he'd jump the 1/2 door from the utility where the dogs sleep, into the kitchen, to do this, and then jump back. Argh... not the nicest thing to deal with first thing every morning. :( :( :(
A week or two ago he was very lame (took to vets etc) and while he was recovering, because I felt sorry for him (he milked his incapacitation to the utmost!), I left his Equafleece on him all the time (before that he only wore it outside). This house isn't particularly cold but, miraculously, every night so far that he's been wearing his fleecy jumper, we've had no accidents.
:) :) :) :) :)
Thoughts? Do you think his kidneys were getting chilled or something? Nothing else has changed apart from him wearing his coat at night. Obviously he's keeping it on now.
Thanks.

Does he pee in the fleece usually? As in when out and about? What ya going to do in the summer?

Also ETS- how did you know it was the lurcher peeing at night if the dogs were back where they were supposed to be by morning?

Did the vets prescribe anything? Is there any chance he some kind of infection, you've not gone into detail on the lameness so may be well off the mark... Whatever it is I hope he continues his dry nights!!

Yes, of course he can pee while wearing the fleece, it's the one he's worn for months for walks, and he wears it 24/7 now. Gee, please don't assume I'm that stupid! ;) ;)
He didn't pee in the kitchen at night in the summer, it's been a winter thing...

He's one of only 2 who can jump over the 1/2 door from the utility into the kitchen (it's about 4' high and the others are short-legged JRTs so no chance of jumping it) and the other one has about 1/4 his bladder capacity, and is a bitch so doesn't pee up things, as he does when he pees in the kitchen!
See "Gee..." above again! ;) ;) ;)

Hedwards, the lameness wasn't related, he escaped and went off chasing hares (argh) across the fields and came back sound but was very lame later, I think he tweaked a ligament or something. Vets gave me Metacam for him, that's all. Limited exercise = totally sound again now.

Very common. My smoothie wears a fleece every night in the winter months. :)

LOL_ totally read the tone of that wrong (should have used more smilies!!!)- I thought he COULD but didnt know if he did, hence the "does he" not a "can he". A dog at the classes I went to ages back wouldnt pee whilst wearing his coat, as once he got the angle wrong and peed on his belly/coat so from then on wouldnt pee with a coat on!!

You'd be surprised just how high the shot legged critters can jump- one at our yard can easily scale a stable door!!

With the fleece thing just wondered if once you took it off in the summer the problem would re surface!

Just to add, (my last reply sounded a bit short), the skinnies will feel the cold more especially the smooths. My Whippet/Bedlington bitch is a horror for peeing when she gets cold so her fleece is on the majority of the time in winter. Also, when she has her last pee at night before bed, if it's raining or chilly she's incredibly lazy to go for a pee and I have to watch her to make sure she has done her business.:)

Ditto this, he's a lazy toad, if it's wet or cold I have to take him out for a quick walk just before I go to bed, ugh! Then, amazingly, he remembers that he does need to go after all!
Because he's such a big dog I thought he was a bit tougher than he is, obviously, the big wuss. ;) ;)

Stan was born in a barn so took a rather laissez faire attitude towards his house training for quite a long time if it was cold or raining out. :) Then he just learned to hold it really well. :D

He is impossible if he's cold at night, crying and generally having a fit until someone gets up and covers him in his duvet. If he's warm we don't hear a peep out of him. He has slept in a jumper in the past but even the Equafleece rubs his hair so he only wears it during the day. But LOTS of pointy dogs wear pj's and I don't think that's people indulging them, I think that's people who want to get some sleep!

Re the having to pee in the night, both mine can easily sleep through without having to go out but if they're woken up then they'll need to go. Right now we're having lots of trouble with foxes and even though I don't let the dogs out everytime they wake up, they often wake me to go out in the night if they've had an interrupted night. So yes, it makes prefect sense to me if he gets woken by being cold then he'll need to pee.

It's not worth letting a pointy dog get cold - it will just make you both miserable! ;)
