My Alaskan Malamute, Korben, is scheduled for xrays and scans on Monday and surgery on Tuesday for luxating patella in his left hind leg. He was at the Osteo specialist today and will discuss the xrays with me Monday afternoon before deciding on the best course of surgery as apparently there are different types of surgery they can do for this condition.

Has anyone elses dog had surgery for this? What timescale am I potentially looking at for recovery and a return to walkies - he's going to go stir crazy as hes used to long walks. Poor boy cant understand why he's not allowed to go mental in the garden and must be on his leash when hes out for the loo :(

Experiences anyone?

Hi, my terrier had this op in stirling last week. He had the deepening of the groove and moving the ligament attatchment across to realign the patella. He is on two weeks cage rest and will start small walks building up to 15 mins 3 times a day at the four week point. No off lead for two to three months. Just now he is ok with the cage as the leg is very sore even with his metacam. I was warned it would be worse than before surgery initially. I am making use of a Kong though. All his food arrives in this which gives him some occupation, particularly as his food has to be reduced anyway.
Other than that I plan to come up with something new to teach him in the next couple of months to work the brain.
If you have any ideas for an 8 yo terrier to learn would love to hear them.
Good luck with the surgery
