Pony is curently out in a Weatherbeeta Landa Lite (no fill) during the day. He seems fine in it but has been a little chilly when I've brought him in on occasion. I'm a bit concerned that with this snow forcast I should have something a bit thicker ready and waiting!

I've seen the Weatherbeeta MW turnout which is 220g. Now I have no idea - is this lots thicker than no-fill? He's a warm pony (native) so I don't want to cook him. Can you get thicknesses inbetween in makes that will fit round a very wide chest?

Any ideas for not too expensive options?

Cheers

:D

I have two cobs and they are in the Weatherbeeta medium lite, which is 100g. I think 220g would be too thick - they had 220g on when it was minus 12 and they are both clipped. They are currently blanket clipped and live out in their 100g rugs, you can get the Weatherbeeta ones with or without full neck.

You could always layer - add a fleecey underblanket to trap some air which will warm up and keep him warm, Lidl had some for about £8

Now that sounds like a top idea! This is my first winter of pony owning so I'm working out as we go along!

Cheers

Shires do a 100g fill - LW rug and these are good for chunky types.

Whilst a fleece is ok, they can sometimes slip and get wet, so I personally prefer to use one rug so I have four weights from no fill to 300 so I can adjust for the conditions. I have yet to need more than the 300 on my full clipped horses as they are hardy types and are only out for about 6 hours a day in winter with hay to help them keep warm.

I would second the weatherbeeta 100g option as they're great rugs and I think would be plenty warm enough for a native. I used a fleece rug under a turnout at some points last year but sometimes they get damp and that isn't very nice.

Here is the one I mean (and the one katherine means): http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Weatherbeeta-...ipment&var=&hash=item8bb2f1ccaf#ht_500wt_1151

They are a bit more money than some lighter rugs but personally I think they're definitely worth it as they are good quality and seem to last (and are a nice fit). Mine has never rubbed and never lets any water in.

I agree! Mine live out 24/7 and are unclipped but I like to have 4 turnouts from no fill to 300g (ish) so that I can pick the right one. :) 300g is warm for an unclipped horse (in my opinion) but I used 220g last year and sometimes had to put a fleece underneath so am upping my game!

imo,a no fill rug will keep a horse dry and clean but i wonder if it is as warm as no rug because it flattens the coat.just a thought.

I got some really nice lw rugs from Swish equestrian, they do 50g and 100g rugs, perfect for this time of year and seem to fit well. Pretty reasonable prices too :)
