Lycra Hood/Turnout

I usually put Barons lycra hood on the night before a show to keep him clean, but I am considering turning him out durning the day in it over the winter to train his mane to stay completly flat. Its the one that zips up under the neck and has holes for ears and eyes.

It did say its suitable for turnout but im worried incase it moves and covers his eyes. He will have a turnout neck cover over it and will be turned out in it for about 6 hrs a day. Hes not the type of horse that gets into everything and comes in covered in cuts, hes just spends most of his time munching the grass.

So do you think they are suitable for turnout?

No, personally I wouldn't - I've seen too many horrific injuries/deathes caused by them twisting over the eyes - even expensive ones

i would if it water proof and hes not one of them horse that gets into everything. Should be ok if it dont move them hes in the stable. My one move so i wouldnt turn helga out this it on.

nope, never. did once, and my old lad went and had a good roll immediately, and stood up with it completely covering his eyes. luckily he just stood still, bewildered, as i went up to him, talked to him, and took it off.
get one of the ones that go over their ears but no further down the face. never anything that has even a chance of twisting and covering their eyes. consequences could be too horrific for words.

Maybe I will invest in the type that just have ear holes then and dont cover the face. I couldnt bare it if he had an accident just for the sake of a flat mane

I bought a full face one then took a pair of scissors to it and cut the whole face bit off - it now pops over his ears so keeps mane & head of neck clean, warm and dry but cannot slip and cover his eyes at all.

I dont think I can do that with mine as the zip goes all the way up so I would be cutting the end of the zip off. Its a good idea though, I will have a look at it later as see.

I would but it would be one that goes just over the ears and not the eyes.

h seems fine in his, so far hasn't moved on his head but it does fit quite snuggly so that may be why,

Nope, never wood. I'm reluctant even to turn out in neck covers after our mare got hers over her head and was stuck that way-it was only luck that I caught her before she did damage

I wouldn't turn-out in a full face hood having seen them slip & horse's panic. I now do what Safina does with them.
