Lycra hoods and shoulder guards

Need one of these because the horseys heavyweight turnout is rubbing his shoulders and mane.. but the descriptions all say 'not recommended for turnout use' why is this? I thought it might be because they will rip easily, if so i dont mind but i cant see why theyre not suitable? thanks

Ah okay, i see now.. haha im an idiot. thanks, thats okay cause its for under a rug with neck attatchment so should be fine

no - and they're not stable enough either - they'll slip over the eyes if you've got a horse which rolls really energetically. I use one with a waterproof neck cover over the top - but my lot only go out for a play and to get muddy - they don't stay out unsupervised for the day
 
I have had a really bad experience using full lycra hoods for turnout and never would again - it moved and got into my previous mare's eyes covering them so that she couldn't see and was running around in a blind panic when I found her, and when I took it off, her eyes were so swollen that she couldn't open them and they were blood-shot and sore for days afterwards. I would never turn out my horse in one again.

Having said that a girl at my yard turns out in one every day and then never slips, so maybe my horse's got stuck.

Regardless, I wouldn't ever run the risk of my horse's eyesight again. I would go for just a lycra should guard rather than full hood.
 
Or go for a bossy bib - they are super. Only cover the shoulders and withers. I have a large full one going spare...
 
omg i just ordered it but im going to call robinsons and cancel it.. i wanted a full hood to stop the mane rubbing but ill just get a shoulder one cause it's not worth the risk.. thanks for informing me
 
No probs. It's just so not worth the risk, like you say.

To protect the mane, you could go to a fabric shop and buy some really smooth material and stitch that inside the hood part of the rug, and then the neck cover will slip more easily over the mane and stop it rubbing and catching so much. Works on the shoulder section too, for future reference.

snuggy hoods do a turnout hood/shoulder guard, that is suitable for turnout. ihave used this on show horses for many years and it still washes up as good as new.....

A forum member on here actually has one of here horses killed using one of those in the field, I too have had a lucky escape with one, as they slip very easily, luckily my horse just stood there, completely terrorfied until I removed it. Please don't use one.

i have used mine for so many years i cant remember how long i have had it. it has been used on lots of different horses, but you do have to make sure that you have a correct fit, too loose and they will move....they are called snuggy hoods for a reason....they have to fit snug to the horse...without being over tight....
 
I use the snuggy hoods for outside use, however, i have a couple from robinsons that i have used in the stable and they slip, the hole areas around the eyes are not as big as are on the snuggy hoods.
 
use a snuggy hood- they don't move and are designed to be used outside.

thousands of people use them (including me) with no issues at all.
 
I used one of these "wonderful" lycra hoods on my cob during the summer as he has sweet itch.

Day 1: went out and said cob was in a VERY sorry state as the damn stupid thing had come down and the bit that's supposed to be there for his eyes, had come down all over his muzzle, effectively rendering him unable to see, plus he'd in his anxiety rubbed a small hole in it.

Day 2: attempted to mend and adjust said article, not easy!

Day 3: blessed thing totally wrecked - he'd rubbed it half-off and it was hanging - dangerously - from his head.

So save your money! Don't use them for turn-out, just for like when you've plaited or whatever, or inside. But the one I had was not only a waste of money it also distressed the horse and was bordering on dangerous.
 
We got some shoulder ones year ago (before rug designed chanmged for the better) and they did work well, just a lycra bit of material that went over the head and had a velcro strap that fastened round the girth area.

My sister bought new one a while ago but it doesn't have any strap to actually secure it so it just comes off over the horses head if he's rolled etc. Not so good! Don't think it was intended for use with a turnout rug!
 
Snuggy hood for me too!! Don't think about turning out with any other type - they move- my mare's eye binding came loose and went across her eye. Never again. Snuggy hoods are expensive but well worth the money, as everyone says already

A couple of people at my yard use snuggy hoods.

I daren't use one on my mare as she hates anything on her face, even a fly mask. She seem to rub her face against her leg until it comes off.

I did buy a lycra hood last year for the stable but not used it yet. It has a zip and just goes over the ears - not the full face one.
 
I'm using a Snuggy hood but find it rubs mine around her muzzle area. She's got bald patches now. She has a fine dished face and it's fairly loose around her nose. Short of darting it, I'm not sure what to do

Why not keep your order and get the head section off? I also had a bad experience with a full head moving over my horse's eyes and will not it again.
