I bought a beautiful piebald cob in the summer with plenty of very white mane & feather. I am wondering how to keep him clean-ish over winter & am thinking about getting a lycra hood rather than rugs with full necks. Do they still tend to make manes fall out? If so, any other ideas?! :)

Only thing about lycra hoods is to be careful about leaving your horse in it as they can slip. I used them on my previous gray horse but not overnight as he was brilliant at moving things around.

I bought the snuggy rug hoods for mine (with ears and a zip) which while horribly expensive, kept both of mine clean. I would not bother with the short neck version as that seems to move too easily. The hoods are expensive but are a godsend. Again though, mine are both on part livery so people are around to make sure nothing slips over my horses eyes..

if you are planning to turnout then a lycra hood isnt really an option on its own it should be under a neck rug but also either one which just goes over ears or snuggy hugs turnout. i am not keen as they can still slip over eyes.
so you may be better off with full neck during day and take off at night. if the rug fits well it shouldnt rub, mine never have!!
