Bought one of these as my pony's rug rubs her shoulders. So far (until Sunday) have been very pleased with it. It fits over the head and has a loop that passes through the front legs and a elastic and velcro 'girth' thing to keep it on.

However, bought pony in on Tuesday, took rug off and noticed that she had two huge lumps behind the girth strap of the shoulder guard. Kinda like the two abdominal muscles behind the girth area were massively swollen. It was like 2 half tennis balls were under her skin and they were sore to touch. No heat though and they were firm not soft.

Now I didn't rug her up on Sunday as a friend was riding her so I don't know how tight the shoulder guard went on... and I'll be honest and say I didn't take her rug off on Monday because I just caught her in, fed her and put her back out again. My bad here

I guessing that the guard was either put on too tight or got wet and then shrunk tight. Left pony in over night and she is now out without a rug on at all The swellings have got smaller but more spread out. Maybe it is a heamatoma (sp?) or something like that? Obviously can't ride as wouldn't want to girth over the swellings.

any thoughts on this (other than to learn to check rugs everyday). Time to heal? Should I be worried? any risks? I showed my YO and he didn't seem too concerned but then he is pretty catatonic about injuries at the best of times

No... maybe will go and investigate. Actually thinking that I might just buy a new LW T/O rug as her current one is pretty old anyway.

Definitely NOT putting the lycra thing back on though. Lumps still present but much reduced in size. Pony loving having week off and is being super affectionate and actually coming to the gate instead of walking away looking cross when I go to catch her

Hopefully she'll be ridable for the SJ on Sun!

I'm not sure what the lumps are, but would definately reccoment a Bossy Bib - they just have the loop at the front, with no straps underneath. They've always stayed in place with our horses too.
