Has anyone had any experience with Lyme Disease in horses? My horse is currently at the vets with suspected Lymes. Has anyone had a horse diagnosed with it? What was the outcome? TIA

Yes, was on v strong antibiotics brought in from USA for over a month and has recovered but it took about 6 months for her to start looking her usual self again. This was FLF who went down with it about a month after I dropped her back home last year. Her owner has been warned that it may re occur in the future and not to put her in stressful situations, but this may be a little ott? They did nearly lose her tho and it was her owner who pushed for the test to be done in mid Oct 16.
Liphook had a number of cases at same time in late autumn 16.
Usually picked up from an infected tick, most likely from a deer.
Hope yours recovers to full health xx

My sister lives in Virginia where Lymes is rife. Her horses have had it more than once. Deer ticks are everywhere and even drop out of bushes onto your head it’s vile!

They’ve recovered with antibiotic treatment but she thinks the long term damage was the cause of her Connie’s recurring laminitis. She did absolutely everything to prevent and treat it and although she got her to 17yrs it was a struggle. Plenty seem to get over it ok though with no further issues.

I could ask her questions for you if you like we are always chatting via messenger.

A friend of mine moved her horses to a different area and the first year 2 got it, both recovered well and the second year 1 got it again but was ok, it seems certain areas are rife with it and the vets will usually be aware of the problem. We both have a high deer population but for some reason i have never had a problem and she has.

Can people I the UK who answer this thread please tell us where the horse was at the time? I have deer all around me and this worries me a lot.

WB I hope your horse is OK. Can you update us?

Hi thanks for the replies. I am awaiting test results. If it does turn out to be LD I will reveal my location and share on all social media but I don't want to frighten anyone unnecessarily. He has been very poorly but he is now responding to treatment. I will post more details once I know for sure what's wrong. Thanks again :)
