I have two horses who seem to have swollen lymph nodes. One is a 19ish old gelding, its swollen on both sides behind the jaw bone (which is where the lymph nodes are im guessing) anyway the geldings are visible where as my mares you cant see that their swollen but they feel swollen compared to my other horses. the mares not bothered by it but if you rub or push the geldings it makes him cough.

Any ideas what this could be?

Where exactly do you mean? Along the cheek bone or underneath the jawbone where the soft bit of the throat meets the head?

If it's along the cheek bone (above where the teeth are) then it could just be grass glands which seem to be pretty common at this time of the year. My mare had huge lumps on her cheeks the other week.

However, if it is more in the throat area, I would speak to your vet and see what they advise, due to the risk of strangles (which seems to be doing the rounds in many areas at the moment).

It definately not strangles, ive seen that and dont look like it. Its between the ear and the lower jaw where it begins to curve.

Ive spoken to the vet and he confirms that it is an allergy. I have been rubbing a mixture of lavender and teatree oil with a base oil on and its reduced the swelling alot.

My girl has had this sort of thing the last few days - exactly where you say. She has had the usual hamster cheeks and they went, but now she has got the squidgy lumps running from her ear down to the bottom of her jaw line. They don't seem to bother her though.
