hi - my beautiful, kind 6 year old mare has been diagnosed with lymphoma today. I am going to spend the day with her tomorrow at the equine hospital to talk to the vet and make 'what next' decisions. Am feeling totally heartbroken but want to do the right thing for her. She is eating and is quite perky (but not her normal self). Is there anyone out there who has had experience of this illness with their horses, I know that the prognosis is vey poor. Would just find it helpful to get feedback from other people who have been in a similar situation - how you coped/what you decided to do.

My mare has been diagnosed with malignant lymphoma although the only recognisable signs are big solid lumps under her skin. She was diagnosed 4 years ago and although lumps are definitely getting bigger, they don't seem to bother her.
She is 12 now - I have been told that I will probably lose her sooner or later as the cancer will spread beyond her skin tissues into other organs. So far so good though, she is retired fom competition and just hacks, hunts and does fun stuff.
There seems to be very little information around on the condition. From what I have read, the skin version (which my mare has) can progress slowly and they can live a while. Unfortunately as far as I know the prognosis is much worse as soon as other organs are impacted. I am prepared to let my girl go as soon as she becomes sick as I don't want to drag things out for her - she is a legend and owes me nothing.
Best of luck with your horse, horrid illness.
