I want to show my Section A this summer - just local shows at first, nothing big. Her feathers are quite long at the heel and are touching the floor - do I trim these a little or leaving them long and trailing?
Oh natural, never touch a Welshies feather. Need more advice on turn out get in touch with the WPCS and they will send you a rule book which has all you need to know
I think you have to strike a balance between retaining full feathers (or even coat) and having consideration for the welfare of the horse.
My personal view is that if the feathers are so long that they are causing problems (ie permanently soaked in wet weather) then I personally would do a little selective trimming, but you have to trim in a 'feathered' way to leave a natural appearance, rather than cutting around in a straight line. Same goes for overlong tails, they either live in a tail bag to prevent damage, or you rough trim the ends to prevent them being dragged along the ground and stood on
i have a welsh D and he's never had a problem with his feathers in winter - i think they probably help keep the mud away from his skin as his skin always seems nice and clean when i wade my way through the feathers to find it. i do trim his tail though or it would get so long it would get trodden on and it's common practice to show section D's with a tail that is feathered to hock length and a pulled mane.
