I'd like to show my highland pony in ridden classes this summer. He's well bred and well schooled, and pretty sensible generally so no issues with the actual riding, but never done showing classes before so anyone got any general advice on how to get the best out of the events and show him off to his best? Thanks for your help!

I don't know what level you are aiming at, but I would suggest that you make sure you get your and his turnout correct. So, in an ideal world...... a plain leather bridle with hunter/flat noseband, leather browband. Tack should be brown. Snaffle for novice classes.

Yourself, tweed jacket, cream jods, black boots (long) shirt and tie can add a little colour if you wish. Brown/tan gloves, brown cane. Navy hat with flesh coloured harness. Have a look at pretty ponies website for ideas.

Individual show - keep it short, don't go on and on for hours. There is no need to rein back or do flying changes, in fact some judges actively frown upon this. Walk, trot and canter on each rein. Some shows have a set individual show which you will have to follow. Try to go to a couple of decent level shows and watch the individual shows. Don't do a canter serpentine as it often makes it very difficult to show the ponies paces, it can be very stop start.

I'm sure someone can post a link to a diagram of an individual show.

Good luck and have fun!
