Hello guys,

As everyone on the planet must know by now, my horse has had inflamed intestines for the past 6 months, lots of near-death experiences, etc. We're now pretty well on the mend, but he's still on codeine to calm his insides down.

The prob - his guts are always making quite alarming rumbling / churning noises. He's not at all colicky but he doesn't like it when it happens. Looks round at himself in surprise rather than pain. I wouldn't like it either if I were him - he sounds like he's going to erupt.

At the mo he's on one milk thistle tab twice a day, 25 ml of gaviscon twice a day (which is the same as coligone but cheaper

) & one yakult twice a day.

Has anyone got any ideas for something to soothe his insides? The gut noise sounds as if you'd better stand back in a hurry cos he's gonna have the worst explosion of diarrhoea EVER...but nothing comes out. Just lots of violent rumblings.

Thank you!

How old is your horse?
I would think that gurrgling noises are alot more healthy than colic or pain its maybe just wind due to medicines they are still on and digestive system settling down, I wouldnt worry too much unless it looks like your horse is in discomfort. Sounds like an improvement on previous... gurgling sounds indicate things are moving?

He's 11... I've had him 4 1/2 years & I've never heard him make these sort of noises before! They are really not at all normal. I'd agree they're better than diarrhoea...but we're only NOT getting diarrhoea cos of the codeine & when we started cutting down the codeine it all went mental again. *warning graphic description* like shooting gravy out of a cannon...

So I thought I'd try it the other way round & see if I could soothe the guts rather than shovelling down the codeine cos codeine's only putting the brakes on his guts rather than 'healing' them (as far as I understand.)

Or maybe a homeopathic vet would be good for this sort of thing?

you must be worried sick, feel sorry for you .

I think homeopathic may be good idea, settle everything back down hopefully, your poor wee horse!

Also dont even know if this exist for horses but i have seen excellent results in humans having being treated with Rheiki.

Just looked in my homeopathic book and it gives lots of remedies for Enteritis (inflamation of intestines) but the one which sound most like your case is;

Corton Tiglium 30c- Severe diarrhoea results from inflamation of the bowel. Stools watery and forcibly expelled. Dose; four times in one day only, three hours apart.

That is from 'the treatment of horses by homoeopathy' by george macleod, I use this book all the time, and find it useful- I got it off amazon. If you have trouble getting hold of the remedy try Helious (it comes up on google) they send out really quickly, and if you rng I'm sure they would advise you about other remedies as well.

Wow, you guys are just sooo helpful...

Have printed your suggestions, & tomtom & I are just off to try to find the local health food shop. According to google, it's indep & does homeopathy etc, so hopefully they will know what they're talking about...

Might get some berry nectar from forever living as that's fab - but you can't get it from the high street which means mail order, & I'm always at work so not in for parcels & I need it NOW!!!

OK, so that took longer than expected... The indep health food shop was closed down, so had to drive another 15 miles to the next town. Person in Holland & Barrett not all that helpful, but got a big bottle of aloe vera liquid, some peppermint oil tablets & some more milk thistle tablets.

Then went to the shop where we get our weirdy vegan food. They didn't have Croton Tiglium but the guy in there recommended Tormentil complex instead & photocpied the info sheet on it. Not sure what we're going to do with it as you're supposed to take it in 'a little' water which is presumably not a bucketful...

Then went to the tack shop on the way home & got a syringe of pre/pro biotic cos we REALLY need a new syringe - current one is now rather chewed - and some pink powder to replace the yakult. It's prob more designed for horses than yakult.

So we're all tooled up & ready to go... Wish us luck...

Hi my horse is quite similar, the probiotic Protexin seemed to work but only short-term and quite expensive. I have seen an advert in the local Free-ads horse paper a few months ago , it was called Gas-Eaze and it was charcoal based, said it worked for gassy horses with rumbling guts. Im sure the advertiser was something like Stable Label but Ive searched ever since and cant find anything - which is really annoying because I would quite like to try it. If anyone sees it advertised or finds the supplier please could you let me know ?
Thanks.
