Farrier came today, and was cutting away at the hoof like he does, and he goes 'oh, she's got maggots' I was like

excuse me? lol
Inside her frog were millions of them! so I asked him what to do, he told me to put some *insert name here* on.
Its that stuff that fizzes, so I borrowed some from my friend.
I am shocked that horses can get maggots, and I'm upset because obviously I'm not looking after Roo properly.

Tink had them under her pads the other day, post in comp riders about it, I have to syringe disinfectant under her pads!!

Don't beat yourself up about it! You do a great job with Roo. The post the other day said that the can be laid and hatch within a few hours so I don't think it is a management issue necessarily.

Stick some hydrogen peroxide in them and it will clear it up no problem.

What M and Z said. Very common. Lots of peroxide (am I sick and twisted that when I use to sort out flyblow bunnies I use to take great pleasure in putting them in peroxide (maggots not Bunnies!!!!)

oh yeah, that's what the fizzy stuff I borrowed was called lol.
An old horse on our yard got it a while back, and no one on our yard had ever heard of it happening. Wasn't aware it was common.
Makes me feel better, thanks guys

I have heard of that before, A horse had these gel pads on which go over the hoof as a concussion minimiser kind of thing. There is no gap really on them, but somehow they'd got in.

Does your horse have pads? If i have answered a question from you already and should know then i appologise as i get quite a lot.

Does the horse have thrush? because untreated thrush often gets maggots.

Best thing if it is thrush is to get on to of it with the HP and then treat every few days with a good dose of good old purple spray

Dont feel bad. I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, its only a fly egg thats got stuck in a bit of hoof and hatched, it doesnt mean you are a bad mum.

PF i dont think i have laughed so much in ages. Obviously poor PF for getting them in the first place, but foofie?????
That has given me the real giggles

More common than you would think - the stuff you mention is peroxide

LOL! She'd been caslicked and the flies laid their eggs in the holes of the stitches. I didn't even notice them (and she didn't grumble) until the little feckers were wriggling out all over the place. Barf, barf barf!!

The farrier: I'm clueless with feet, so excuse me if I sound like an idiot lol. she doesn't have pads in her feet, what are pads in feet for? Is that for laminitis or something? I don't have a clue if she has thrush but the farrier never mentioned it. :S
PF: hahahahaha that made me giggle, poor pony

good job they are easily got rid of isnt it.
JM07: I love that comment haha

Pad have many uses
smile.gif
from protecting the sole to cushioning the feet for various reasons, for preventing concussion etc

If she had thrush there would be an odour above and beyond the normal smell of feet
laugh.gif
also black gunge

Ask your farrier next time if she does have thrush otherwise she just got fly larve in there and voila maggots. the HP will kill them

My mare gets them in just her near fore. She has such deep clefts (sp) that they little b*ggers can get into them. Her clefts are so deep you can put the whole length of the hoof pick into the cleft and still not hit the bottom

She gets HP twice a week in that foot, once in the others to keep them clean. And purple spray once a week in the summer, twice in the winter.

It's not that unusual and hydrogen peroxide will soon shift them. They are not doing any harm, but eating away rotten tissue within the frog, which is an area that can easily become infected.

I think I'm right in remembering maggots hatch about 8-10 hours after being laid. Killed a magpie yesterday morning - was in road and left flying away too late and flew under car. Was crawling with maggots when I walked the dog yesterday evening (was moving by itself!), and today I couldn't get close but each time I wen tpast a cloud of flies flew up. Ewww!

Two years ago my horse had fly strike (if that's what it's called) checked him am all fine no probs, went back in the afternoon he had loads of maggots in his mane, called the vet she prescribed a product that they use on rabbits worked really well, spent ages washing the little B*****s out trying not to be sick, really scary at how quick it happens

Some vets treat deep thrush with maggots! A friend of mine had maggots applied to her horses feet by a vet and ended up with a bill for over £400!!!!!!!!

At least these were free
