Hi All,

My elderly chap has just had his fortnightly willy wash - and I noticed on the cloth I used to clean it a few small maggots.

I feel completely sick, poor old lad - he was really fidgety when I was cleaning it, but then he always is.

I am now really paranoid that there are loads in there further up than he will let me clean - have given it a good clean and put some hibiscrub in there - but he is very shy and holds his bits up as far as poss to avoid proper cleaning.

My question is would you call the vet NOW and have him sedated for a proper wash of all his bits - or wait and clean it again tomorrow and see if any more crawlies are in there?

God I feel sick!

I have never seen any crawlies near his bits before - he is really well cared for and not neglected.....

What would you do?

My old boy came back from hospital with maggots in his sheath - he was so uncomfy and could hardly stand. We washed it out thoroughly with hibiscrub (on advice of vet) until the sponge came out clean, and he was fine. No recurrence the next day. They were a particular type of stable fly. I'd say keep washing until you get no more maggots and I don't necessarily think you need to call the vet unless you can't get rid of them or you see sores etc and your chap seems even more uncomfy. I'm no pro on this, just speaking from my own experience thus far.

My boy had this, I called the vet as he was incredibly stressed about something and kicking out with his hind legs. The vet sedated him which made him drop his penis so he could give it a really good clean with hibiscrub. He then put sudocreme on it, and gave him an anitbiotic jab and a follow up course for me to give him over the next week. I would recommend speaking to your vet, it's unlikely that you can get it really clean without sedation and there could be some skin damage.
