I am such a bad mother.

Yesterday I noticed my old boy was kicking at his belly - he is prone to gassy colic, but didn't look otherwise colicy to me. I hacked him out as the exercise would help move things along if that's what it was.

He seemed absolutely fine, so I didn't think any more of it, until I brought him in this morning and he started kicking at his belly again. Uh oh, I thought, maybe he's going to have to stay in for a few hours each day - maybe the grass is a bit rich for him. Then he had a wee, and I couldn't see his willy come out :o

Went and had a feel, it felt quite hot and a little swollen so took him to the vets. He doesn't have an infection, but just loads of maggots in his sheath

Vet cleaned it all out, and told me to just keep an eye on it. Thought I would share with you all - hope you're not eating!

Blurgh!
A horse at one of the yards I work had them last year. He is very sensitive to fly bites, so I was told to put some sudocrem on him - I touched his sheath and came away wil maggots on my hand...lovely!
THATS why I dont have geldings! lol!!

bleurgh! Almost scared to look at G's sheath now!

I used to turn my horse out with sheep and he occasionally got maggots in his feet, the farrier used to cut them and the dead foot out and put peroxide on them which kept them at bay for ages.

gross, gross, gross.

Despite a fly rug, I found maggots in my mare's melanoma the other day :-0 So that was a nice fun evening, picking them out! I have put sudocreme on now in case that helps. I usually check every day as she has had it before but I noticed as she was swishing her tail and looked peed off! It is quite early in the season I think. In the past have treated several sheep with fly strike, the maggots have literally poured off the sheep when they have been drenched.

That's interesting - we have sheep in our field - wonder if that's why he got them?

Monikirk - sorry, should have put on a Public Health Warning :D

Just to say - they weren't full blown maggots, just little dots, almost like midges. Have to check his willy for them again today eurgh!
