i have been lent a magic bit by a tack shop to try on my girl who is proving mighty hard to bit.
if it is too harsh--eg dutch gag, kimblewick--she gets really wound up. if it is too soft she has no brakes.
does anyone use this small and simple looking bit?
is it too mild??or is it small but mighty?

Its got loose rings and a straight bar mouthpiece, but with a small port in the middle (like a cambridge mouth kimblewick mouth).

Is it a loose ring , straight bar with a small port in the middle?
If so they are popular on childrens ponies although the trendier cartwheel type bit is taking over.
I have used one on my cob when he needed a snaffle but progressed to the same mouthpiece with a hang cheek. He also goes well in a pelham without the curbchain. They work well on a horse that will not accept a jointed mouth but leans on a fixed ring. It is very similar to a traditional kimblewick but without the curb action.
You could also go to the other extreme of a waterford if she doesnt like a nutcracker action.

We use one on a shetland that puts its tongue over the bit and I have to say it is great my daughter finally has steering, brakes have never been an issue.

yes it is a loose ring straight bar with a small port. is it any good with stronger or exciteable ponies?? she gets really wound up by stronger bits which make more problems--so trying a softer approach. can they take hold of it or would the loose rings prevent this?

I found my ponies really wooden in it but when I put them back in normal bits it had stopped them leaning.

So I use it as a remedy bit not a every day one.
