I've put one horse on 'Magic' calmer a few weeks ago now, because although he's a good boy, he can be very spooky at silly things (crisp packets etc..) and to get anywhere worth going, we have to ride up a very busy road, although the traffic doesn't bother him. The other horse is on 'Magic' because of an injury, and can only do walk work under saddle. He's a nice steady chap, but because of the restrictions on his work, I thought a wee bit of calmer might not hurt. However....all was fine for a couple of weeks, and I was quite pleased with how spooky horse seemed a bit more settled, and injured horse seemed nice and calm as well, but as time has gone on, they both seem to be getting REALLY spooky. There's been no change to their diet or routine etc, but the Magic seems to be wearing off.....has anyone else noticed an adverse effect when they've used mag ox.?

don't forget there is flush of grass October time so it might be down to that, with all the best will in the world a magnesium based calmer won't prevent exhuberance from the grass! My horse is on it and I've taken her off a number of times and found her resulting behavior dreadful so have put her back on it. I have found it to be fantastic over the past three years.

Yes, I appreciate they can get a bit fresh in spring and autumn when the grass sprouts, but they both seem to be behaving rather out of character. The only thing I've done different is give them calmer. I suppose I'll have to try them without it and see what happens, hopefully they'll revert back to normal, but I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience with it?

I had this with Magic calmer too, made her really spooky even though it worked well with another horse. I find Blue chip karma or science supplements prokalm better for her before a show and she has Topspec calmer in her feed every day but she has had that throughout. I tried upping Topspec but it wasn’t quite right although I love it Day to day. I think it depends on the horse. All of them have magnesium in but the formation of the product obviously just works better for her.

Interesting! it does seem such a co incidence that both horses have gone a bit loopy, and as you say, maybe it works better for some and not at all (or worsens behaviour) in others. Has anyone else found it has actually made things worse?

My horse is on straight mag ox (from natural horse supplies) on a very small daily dose in spring/summer. During autumn/ winter when he's in more and on haylage I give him TopSpec Calmer as he gets very enthusiastic about his life and I can't say I always share that enthusiasm to quite the same level :)

It will only act as a calmer if the horse is low in mag, if not there will be no calming effect, I used it on one of mine when he was coming back into work and he gradually became worse , took him off and he was back to being his normal spooky self which was easier to deal with, I have a feeling it may work initially in part as a placebo to the rider but for many sharp horses it will really be of little use.
