Does magnesium only work as a calmer when a horse is deficient in it?

If your horse is not deficient in magnesium I assume a magnesium based calmer like Magnitude or Magic would have no effect?

If this is the case what would all you lovely people on here suggest to calm down a very lively horse?

I was told that was the case before I bought one. However the only one I was able to get my hands on in the end was a magnesium based one and so far it seems to have had the opposite effect

You could always try it and see if it works or choose a non-magnesium based calmer i.e. Global Herbs Thoroughbred Calmer.

Try Equimins Serenity, its guaranteed or your money back, fortunately I didnt have to get my money back because the stuff worked with amazing results, I always recomend it.

Don't know your situation... But I had my mare on every calmer on the market and in the end I changed around my routine etc and she doesn't need one at all now (well not quite anyway bless her)
xx

A second vote for Equimins from me. I tried the Serenity on my TB who gets anxious and stressed quite easily. It didnt seem to be working so I spoke to their helpline who were fantastic. They now make up a special blend for me, based on what I told them, and Che is so much more chilled and content within himself, its amazing. I was really impressed by the service I got from David and co, calmers seem to be such a complex subject and after listening to me he came up with some really helpful suggestions and obviously knows his stuff. It seems magnesium itself is quite a complex mineral(?) and different types work in different ways.

Totally agree, he really goes out of his way to talk everything through with people, very helpful indeed.

found Magic works best of the magnesium based ones on my chap who is full Tb but friends horses that are warmblood x seem much better suited by Procalm which is what we used for all our quadrille team at olympia last year, its very good stuff, HR medics now supply a trial size pouch for trying out.

Thanks I'll ring Equimins have always liked their stuff anyway!

At the moment Axel is on Magnitude which has in the past worked very well, however at the moment he is very lively and a bit nervous out hacking, although in the school he's not lol!!
I'm giving him 2 scoops twice a day which equates to 20mgs when the recomended dose is 5mgs.
He seems to be lethargic but very nervy, but then will suddenly explode bucking and plunging, then will try and bugger off with me for a while before settling down again.
Today in the school he was very lethargic but was settled. the he produced some brilliant work but then got tired so I stopped. I can't win at the moment!! Will try hacking him again tomorrow and see what he's like.
