Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate flakes, anyone feed this

I used to. Current horse doesnt seem to need it. Mine cam off ebay in 25kg sacks and I used to use it in the bath as well. Its something a lot of cattle farmers use apparently, and you can get it for about £8 a sack from most agricultural merchants

My boy suffers with arthritis and is a good doer so I am just trying to feed him stuff that helps with muscle/metabolism etc, in the hope that it makes him feel better all -round rather that just focusing on the joints, I have been feeding unmollassed sugarbeet and read about the high calcium which interferes with Magnesium uptake.
 
mag oxide is turned to mag chloride in the stomach so no benefit in feeding one over the other i dont think as they end up exactly the same pre digestion

Thats a new one on me re the calcium. Magnesium oxide is normally given to cattle in the water supply where it can be accurately mixed and is very effective. The metabolism and use within any animal is very complicated and continuous use can in itself cause symptoms of a shortage. Must admit I have never heard of it implicated in arthritis either. Are you sure its not the calcium phosphorus ratio that you are mistaking this for as that indeed has implications in skeletal development but mainly in young horses.

Thats why I fed it. It seems to be much more palatable and better absorbed. I know I notice a difference if I used mag chloride in the bath as opposed to any other sort of magnesium, although I do appreciate that's not scientific in the slightest :lol:
 
I bought a 25kg bag of mag chloride from Countrywide farmers its called NedMag and cost about £8.00 and they delivered as well. My IR mare has done well on it next to no pulses at all and had some grass every day all through summer and her crest came down and felt really soft and spongey . Shes got a bit of arthritis and I feed turmeric and just started boswellia and linseed.
