I have 1 nervous cob, and a pony with metabolic syndrome. I have decided to try magnesium oxide as a calmer for the cob. Am I right in thinking it would also be beneficial for the EMS pony? Is is the same stuff. Any recommended brands?

Brands are more expensive (Magnitude for instance) whereas it is cheap in a pure form (99.7% I think) from places like Pro-Earth on ebay or naturalhorsesupplies.co.uk

I got mine from natural horse supplies found it really helped, he only needed it while the grass was unbalancing his system while the spring grass was coming through. But he acts up every year at the same time and this defo helped. I used the purest one.

I was recommended naturalhorsesupplies from here a few weeks ago -probably longer. I now recommend them too... I buy more tha just mag now, I love the detox blend fro my lami.

Another vote for naturalhorsesupplies - their Magnesium Oxide worked far better than any Magic or other branded item on our mare. The Agnus Castus is good for hormonal mares as well.

I don't think that £18.99 for a 6 months supply is expensive?

I use Magnitude on a mare I own and have been very pleased with the results.

I recently stopped using Natural Horse Supplies because the prices have jumped up a fair bit. The stuff was cheap before, it was just the p&p that pushed it up, now it's just too pricey. Not only that, my ponies wouldn't eat the last lot of Brewer's yeast they sent me

My last lot of mag I bought from Feedmark, they had forty % off and the p&p was free, so I stocked up :)

The cheapest way to feed magnesium oxide is as calcined magnesite from Farm Shops at about £9 per 25 kilo sack. It is coarser than the white powder but horses eat it well.

I have been looking at this for a particular horse and have been advised that the coarse granules beacuse it is an ion are not as easily absorbed, is this not the case ?
I was told this is why it is cheaper than the pharmucutical sp? grades of magnesium.
Would be interested to know if this is correct.

It may be the case that it is less easily absorbed, but it is so incredibly cheap, and flushes out of their system if fed to excess, that you just feed more! It's more to do with particle size, I think, than anything else. As far as I am aware it is all magnesium oxide, but I stand to be corrected on that.

Many, many barefooters have their horses on calmag from Farm Supplies shops.

Can you give horses Magnesium tablets which you can buy in health shops and supermarkets? It's loads cheaper but don't know if it's effective on horses.

Have just bought some magnesium oxide from Natural Horse Supplies for my 16.1 TB. Can anyone tell me how much I would need to feed and is it fed once a day or twice a day. In mils if you can please and I have several mil scoops kicking about in the tack room rather than grams.
